As we step into 2026, it’s natural to look back on the year that was and acknowledge that for many of us in Aotearoa New Zealand, 2025 was tough. The economy slowed, many businesses and households felt pressure, and the nation weathered its share of challenges. But as we turn the page, there are real signs of resilience and opportunity, and reasons for hope as we look forward together.
Most poignantly, we also remember and honour those who lost their lives in the devastating landslides around Tauranga and the Mount Maunganui region in late January. The scenes of destruction and the ongoing search and recovery efforts remind us of the fragility of life and the strength of community. Our hearts go out to the families and friends of those killed and to all who are grieving, rebuilding, or waiting for news of loved ones. We commemorate their memory with respect and compassion.
Economic Reality in 2025, And Why 2026 Holds Promise

There’s no glossing over the fact that last year was difficult for the economy. Unemployment remained relatively high by recent standards, and growth stalled in parts of the year. Official data showed the unemployment rate reached levels not seen in several years, reflecting ongoing labour market softness.
However, 2025 also gave us the first real signs that the economy is turning a corner:
- New Zealand’s GDP climbed 1.1% in the September quarter, showing broad-based activity across multiple industries, after earlier contraction.
- Forecasts from independent organisations and international bodies suggest growth will continue into 2026 and beyond, with projections indicating stronger expansion as monetary policy eases and confidence rebuilds.
- Key sectors, including tourism, exports, and international education, continue to contribute significantly, with education exporting over NZ$4.5 billion in value and drawing tens of thousands of students to our shores.
These aren’t just statistics; they’re markers of momentum that can help spark renewed confidence in businesses, workers, and communities across the motu.
What These Trends Mean for Us
The numbers point to a gradual shift from contraction to modest but real growth. That translates into:
- More business activity and opportunities for innovation and entrepreneurship
- Jobs returning and new roles emerging as sectors like tourism and education strengthen
- Greater incentive for investment, both local and international
- A foundation for improved household confidence and spending
All of this means that 2026 offers a fresh start, a chance to plan, invest, build, and grow with a clearer horizon ahead.
Turning Hardship into Strength

What gets overlooked in raw economic data is the human resilience behind it. Last year tested us, in families, workplaces, and communities. Some weathered layoffs, tight budgets, stress, and uncertainty. Others confronted personal loss or the sheer weight of global events that seemed out of our control. And yet, here we are choosing to look forward, to learn, and to plant seeds for a better year.
That is what makes us uniquely Kiwi. When the seas are rough, we don’t just hold on; we find a way to navigate them. We support one another, we innovate, and we rebuild.
A Year for Opportunity
As we begin 2026:
- Let’s hold onto the signs of economic recovery and use them as fuel for ambition.
- Let’s invest in our people and communities, knowing gains in well-being and skill are as important as gains on balance sheets.
- Let’s create spaces where ideas flourish, where hard work is celebrated, and where businesses find fresh pathways to success.
And above all, let’s carry forward the memory of those lost in tragedy, dedicating acts of kindness, service, and community support in their honour.

2025 may have been a year we’re glad to leave behind, but it didn’t define us. The year ahead holds promise, opportunity, and room for all of us to grow personally, professionally, and together as a nation. Here’s to a year of progress, connection, and hope.
